Kumon of Queensbury Kumon Kids

Kumon Enrollment

The process begins with a parent orientation which includes a discussion of the Kumon method and your child's specific needs. A placement test is given to the child and the results are discussed. An individualized plan is made tailored specifically to your child's needs.

***The testing is free and there is no obligation to enroll.***

Center Times

Mondays: 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Thursdays: 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

A child that is enrolled in the program will come to the center twice a week. Center time takes about 30 - 45 minutes per subject. During center time, the child does his or her center assignment, all supplemental activities appropriate for the subject, returns completed homework, and receives the new daily homework assignments. The daily homework should take 10-15 minutes per subject.   The child meets with the instructor to review homework, check progress and set goals.

A Typical Class Day

  1. The first step for the student after arriving is to go to the check-in desk to turn in the completed homework. Each student receives a folder with new packets of homework as well as the class work.
  2. The student then finds a seat and begins the class work.
  3. Upon completion, the class work is turned in to one of the assistants for grading. Any mistakes are corrected by the student and rechecked by the assistant.
  4. Reading students will read aloud to the assistant.  Math students depending on level will work on a magnetic number board, write in a numerical notebook, and do oral math facts with the assistant.
  5. The student takes the completed class work to the main Instructor. The Instructor and student will discuss any problems and set goals for the upcoming homework.
  6. The student returns the folder to the Check-In desk and is ready to leave.

Class Procedures and Policies

Class Attendance

On Center days your child will spend 30 - 45 minutes in class per subject. This time may vary depending on level, age, and worksheets assigned. Parents are responsible for their children once they leave the work room.  Junior Kumon students make an appointment for their center visit.  Regular Kumon students may come anytime between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Class attendance is a vital part of the Kumon program. Observing students at work in class assists greatly in the planning process for that student. We also prefer to introduce new concepts in class so we may assist your child in reaching his Kumon goals. If a student is unable to attend class, please call the Center by 10:00 a.m. the day of class. This will allow us the time to make adjustments to the student's plan and prepare the work to be picked up.

Vacations

Kumon homework is assigned 365 days per year unless requested in writing one week prior to the date of adjustment. Parents should complete an "Absence Notification Form," available in the Parent Waiting area, at least one week prior to the absence. Please indicate the class days to be missed and any adjustments required for the student's work. We strongly encourage students to continue their Kumon study during vacations. All work will be prepared in advance and given to the student on his last center day before the vacation.

Absence Policy

A student who, for whatever reason, does not take any Kumon materials in a given month, but who plans to resume Kumon study within 2 months, is considered absent. An absent student is considered discontinued after two consecutive months of absence. If a discontinued student resumes Kumon study the registration fee will be charged and the student must take a placement test.

We welcome your feedback. Please feel free to ask questions and share concerns. Conferences may be scheduled anytime during the year.

Instructor Information

A little bit about my background.  My name is Sumi Chakraborty and I am a certified Elementary Teacher.  I have lived in Queensbury for almost ten yrs now.  My husband grew up in the upstate NY area as well.  I have two daughters who are 7 and 9.  They have benefitted tremendously from the Kumon program and have become Honor Roll students.

I have a degree in Psychology and I love working with children of different ages.  My cousins in Canada had a lot of good things to say about Kumon.  My friends’ children were enrolled in the program for a long time before I took a closer look at it.  As I entered into the KUMON training program, I developed a passion for this method of learning and its history.  Now that my own children have been doing it for two years I can confidently say that they are going to finish the program.  It gives me a lot of pleasure to see children overcoming their learning disabilities and transforming from “Math haters” to being confident Math students.

As a KUMON parent, I love it that I have a structured curriculum to follow in the Kumon program and I am not out buying workbooks so my girls can get enough practice in their Math and Reading skills.   I also love the fact that they spend less than 15 minutes to do their school homework and I don’t have to help them much.  They have more free time to do their other activities since they can are more efficient in juggling activities.
